I founded Margaret Bauer Graphic Design in 2007. My studio is based in Washington, DC, with a focus on museum and university press publications. Before opening the studio, I was design manager of the Publishing Office at the National Gallery of Art, where I worked from 1994 to 2006. I studied Russian and Soviet history at Yale University, and then earned an MFA in graphic design from Yale School of Art. I am an adjunct professor at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University, where I have taught publication design. I have also worked with the United States Postal Service to create stamps, including sheets celebrating modern American architecture and American industrial design.
Every project provides opportunities for learning about new topics, new techniques, new typefaces, and new materials. I enjoy the research phase as much as the actual making of each book. And I relish the collaboration that book making entails. The most successful books emerge when that collaboration begins early and remains integral throughout the project’s evolution.
My work has been recognized with awards from American Institute of Graphic Arts, American Association of Museums, Association of University Presses, “I.D.” magazine, Stiftung Buchkunst, and the New York Book Show.
